Warm weather is here and it's time to come out of hibernation and resume outdoor projects.
The deer devoured our baby azaleas over the winter so we'll be replacing most of them. The tags at the nursery said "Deer Resistant". I guess the deer don't bother to read tags.
The hollys survived so we'll be adding more and I'm going to try a few Gardenias in my search for things the deer don't like. I'll update the Woodland Gardens section later this season.
Paving The Driveway
Paving the driveway has been the BIG spring project. This wasn't one of our immediate priorities (or budget) but oil prices are at historic lows and asphalt prices are down as a result. Our driveway is over 350 feet so it's more like paving a street and the savings from doing the project now are pretty significant.

Paving the driveway has been the BIG spring project. This wasn't one of our immediate priorities (or budget) but oil prices are at historic lows and asphalt prices are down as a result. The first step was to resurface the existing stone driveway with a 1-2 inch layer of crusher run. Crusher run differs from crushed stone or gravel. It includes pulverized stone dust or fine sand particles along with crushed stone which allows the material to be compacted into a dense, sturdy surface.
The driveway is really long so they brought in a road grader to smooth and level the crusher run. Then it gets compacted with a roller.

The end result is a smooth, hard-packed base for the asphalt. It looks so nice I almost hate to cover it up.
Ahhh... there's nothing like the smell of hot asphalt in the morning...
Now we have a nice paved road through the woods.
