I have a bit of bad news for those of you who love Cajun cooking. No more Crawfish Etouffee for you!!

It seems that the weather was too hot AND too cold so this year's harvest is way down.

Hello Everyone! The New Year is almost here!

We have all heard of Farm-To-Table. This is a movement where restaurants (allegedly) serve fresh, locally grown food produced by awesome, environmentally conscious people.

Well, California is now introducing Toilet-To-Tap. This is a movement where the wise and benevolent government will recycle your poop so you can drink it again. What could be more appetizing??

Now the concept is coming to the socialist utopia of California.

As I wrote 18 months ago, water scarcity is a genuine problem that needs to be addressed. BUT I can't imagine that recycling poop-water is more economical that desalinating sea water ... and California has an abundance of sea water.

Well, now that we have plenty of TP there is a shortage of ... laxatives. Yes; the United States has become the Constipation Nation.

Apparently, "[COVID] changed many people's dietary habits for the worse, leading to an increase in eating unhealthy snacks..."

So... if you have COVID-Anxiety (the woke opposite of COVID-Apathy) then there is a good chance that you are full of $hit. (gosh, I love my own jokes).

Lions and Tigers and Bears... OH MY!

The Globalists want you to be terrified of Scary Scarcity. Global shortages of this, that and whatever continue. Some are due to natural causes but all shall be blamed on Climate Change and evil white capitalism.

Rice
India has restricted exports of non-Basmati rice again this year which has caused massive panic buying in America. But, please keep in mind the panic buying is among Indian and Pakastani customers who are afraid that they will no longer be able to purchase their favorite imported brands.

We at neoTerra consume a lot of rice (I prefer rice over potatoes or pasta). Personally, I prefer Basmati (which, fortunately, is not restricted) and Jasmine (which isn't from India) so this 'panic' does not affect me in the slightest.

Observing this irrational, panic behavior saddens me. I honestly don't understand how intelligent, well-educated people can go insane scrambling over rice (here in America) when there is no actual shortage. I understand that people have a preference for their home-town variety or brand... BUT there are so many excellent alternatives. Storming the gates, like third-world, famine-starved Ethiopians is so disappointing.

There is NO SHORTAGE of rice in America so DON'T PANIC.

Scary Scarcity
As y'all probably know by now, our global overloads relentlessly try to keep us in a state of irrational fear and anxiety. To help maintain my Rational Prepper perspective, I give the biggest, baddest boogeymen cute names.

Scary Scarcity (i.e. famine, poverty, declining prosperity) has been a recurring boogeyman ever since The Limits To Growth was published by The Club Of Rome 50 years ago. Though none of their dire predictions came true, they continue to tell us that the world will end if we don't reduce ourselves to poverty.

Many times, shortages are due to natural causes (bad harvests, for example) but some of our most dire shortages are intentionally created by a dishonest or incompetent government. Let's look at the latest news.

Eggstra, Eggstra
Yikes, there is actually some good news. The chicken population is recovering from last year's Avian Flu epidemic and egg prices are returning to normal. YAY!

The Cocoa Crisis
We have been hearing about the end of chocolate for a few years now... BUT it's getting serious!

Cocoa prices have soared to a seven year high due to a worsening global bean deficit.... that is media-speak meaning "we eat too much chocolate".

Climate Hysterians now claim that the Cocoa plant will become extinct by 2050, because of global warming (It's funny how the Climate Calamity is always 30 years away).

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) the climate in West Africa will become too hot and dry to grow Cacoa (or coffee) by 2050.

BUT, the Prophets of Doom never think of a creative solution. If the global temperature becomes too warm in West Africa then neoTerra will become perfect for growing coffee and cacoa.

Maybe I'll start a cacoa plantation when I grow up. YAY!

The Coffee Crisis
It seems that coffee is suffering the same fate as cocoa. Coffee prices have recently hit a 12-year high due to El Nino. We stocked up last year and only replenish our supply when it's on sale.

Wheat and Corn
Last year's extreme drought in California has been replaced by abundant snow (and even flooding).

However, changes in El Nino have shifted the worst of the drought to the Great Plains. Experts predict that the Kansas wheat harvest will be the worst in 60 years and the United States may actually have to import wheat.

Of course weather predictions are notoriously bad so the drought could break. That said, it might be prudent to stock up a bit when you see a good sale. Pasta has a really long shelf life.

FREE Beer
Finally, some good news! The Bud Boycott is continuing and AB is getting desperate. The beer aisle is filled with 'Buds' while the alternatives are selling out.

They are so desperate that they are literally paying you to haul their (crappy) beer away. While some stores are selling 24 packs for $3.49, AB is offering a $20 rebate. Yikes, you can make a $16 profit!

If it wasn't one-coupon-per-customer I would buy a truckload and replenish my retirement account.

So there ya' go... Anheuser-Busch, fighting inflation one Bud at a time!

Conclusion
Food insecurity is real, but the response from globalists is hypocritical.

On one hand the UN 2023 Global Report on Food Crisis is dire, claiming over 253 Million people face serious food shortages or starvation.

On the other hand, the Globalists are doing everything they can to make the situation worse. For example, The Netherlands, one of the world's leading food exporters, is forcing thousands of family farms out of business 'to save the climate'.

And Ireland plans to force dairy farmers to kill 200,000 cows to stop them from farting. You can't make this $hit up.

The Ministry of Plenty was forced to reduce the chocolate ration from 30 grams/week down to only 20. So the Ministry of Truth announced that the chocolate ration would be increased to 20 grams per week. The people went to the streets... to thank Big Brother for his generosity.

The Rational Prepper - Victory Gardens

Lost and Found
A couple of months ago I talked about putting in a vegetable garden. The coldest temps on record created problems with our well and killed a couple thousand dollars of shrubs. So I lost my motivation for planting.

Then I visited my friends G&J. They gave me a tour of their amazing garden and I found my enthusiasm again!

That said... I'm starting small with just four containers. If I can actually get anything to grow then I'll add four more next year.

Progress Report
The only sunny location at neoTerra is along the north side of the driveway. It's also the most level location on our property... but it's not that level.

The project started two weeks ago with delivery of 10 yards of topsoil. Since I'm obsessive, I bought a truckload of concrete blocks to level the containers.

Here are the two front containers with the entry gate.

View toward the south with three containers in place. I like the way the corrugated metal containers go with the metal siding on the house. Note that the concrete piers extend past the containers to the left... that will provide the foundation to extend the garden next year (if I'm ambitious).

A view from the east. Only one more container to install! BUT, I have to move a lot of dirt first... It takes about a cubic yard for each of the two front containers and more for the back containers which are 10-12 inches above grade.

I'd better get moving!!! It's almost time to plant!

This week it was revealed that the Biden Administration is considering a mandatory program to vax all the chickens in America to control the H5N1 bird flu.   Because... The Sky Is Falling!

This could be a huge problem for farmers since many other countries will not accept food products from animals that have been treated with hormones or a controversial vax.

On the other hand, the pharmaceutical companies are very excited to have Billions of new customers.

Chicken Registration
Not to be outdone by Biden, the UK government is requiring people who raise a few chickens for their personal use to register them with the government. (aka backyard chickens)   “These proposals will enable us to have a full picture of the number and location of birds kept across Great Britain"

Random Thoughts
It strikes me as odd that we make no effort to keep track of MILLIONS of un-vaxxed illegal aliens wandering around the country but we need to have contact tracing for backyard chickens!

Actually, illegal aliens do bring illegal alien chickens into the United States (along with illegal alien fentynal and illegal alien weapons) ... but they are exempt "sanctuary chickens'. Under the Democrat DACA (Deferred Action for Chicken Arrivals) rule, the illegal chickens shall be referred to as Drumsticks!

Bad Birdies
There are over 65 species of wild birds that are also susceptible to Avian Flu. (that's the main vector for it's spread, BTW). Thus far, our Socialist Overlords have not be able to compel the Billions of wild birds to come in for registration, vaccination and contact tracing.   Rebellious Ravens and Selfish Sparrows simply refuse to comply!

The Rational Prepper - Let Them Eat Turnips

Inflation and shortages are definitely taking a toll here in the United States. But Europe, with it's Climate Change obsession is getting pummeled (which they rightly deserve).

Inflation in the UK, for example, is almost double what it is here. Food inflation is at 16.8% for January, while petrol (aka gasoline) is up 129.4% and electricity is up 66.7%. Many, MANY Britons are being crushed and forced to choose between heating and eating.

In a world of wokeness, Therese Coffey, the UK Secretary for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs stated... if people can't afford food then they should "work more hours or get upskilled to get a higher income."

I'm not sure how long it takes to get 'upskilled' but I bet your kids will starve before you get a higher income.

To make matters worse, there is such an extreme shortage of fresh produce that stores have started rationing things like peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers... three to a customer! It is hard for me to comprehend a national shortage of tomatoes.

Seriously... don't they have greenhouses in the UK?? Well, yes they do. BUT many have been shut down because of restrictions on fertilizer and the soaring cost of energy needed to heat and light the growing areas.

Here again, the helpful Secretary had a brilliant solution saying that Britons should eat turnips instead of tomatoes. Apparently, there's no shortage of turnips... which really doesn't surprise me.

The only difference between Marie Antoinette and this government buffoon is that Marie was skinny enough to shove into the guillotine! It does not appear that Dr. Coffey is getting by on turnips.

Scarcity - The Shortage Report

As we head into heating season it's appropriate to check up on recent shortages.

Pharmaceuticals
Back in October I wrote about shortages of Adderall and Ozempic (a diabetes medication). This month we can add shortages of antibiotics such as amoxicillin and Augmentin (a form of amoxicillin).

This seems almost unbelievable to me since pharmaceutical grade amoxicillin is still readily available from Pet Meds. I suppose that pets aren't willing to pay a premium to get critical antibiotics.

There are also shortages of Tamiflu and other over-the-counter cold medications.

Apparently, there is also a shortage of ibuprofen so try not to get a New Year's Eve hangover.

Baby Formula
Remember the baby formula shortage that started almost a year ago? Sure you do. Well the Administration put a band-aid on the problem for a few months by shipping formula in from the UK. But the shortage continues and the King's Subjects can longer afford to bail Joe out. Manufacturers are saying the shortage will continue until spring.

Diesel
There is a growing global shortage of diesel and home heating fuel. Here in the US, the diesel shortage has impacted the Southeastern states and a shortage of home heating oil will have a major impact on the New England states this winter (Heating oil is still used extensively in the Blue Northeast where the scream the loudest for the rest of us to cut our carbon footprints).

Turkey Shortage
